Sustainability arrives to London Fashion Week

Some thoughts on London Fashion Week embracing sustainability.

Did you know London Fashion Week added new sustainability standards? Alright, specifically to the Newgen program, but they did.

Following the steps of the Copenhagen Fashion Week, the British Fashion Council established new minimum standards of sustainability and responsibility to those new brands that participate in the Newgen program, an incubator for emerging brands that among other features offer them to show their collection at the London Fashion Week.

What is the good side of it? Three points to notice. One, new brands have to be sustainable. With initiatives such as this one, new talents have to embrace sustainability in order to be competitive and even noticed. So sustainability in fashion is clearly becoming a rule and no longer a good practice or a nice to have. Two, soon big established brands will have to adapt themselves. The change is coming from the small, since for evident reasons big companies are slower to adapt. For bigger brands it is a transition that has to be done through all their supply and distribution chains, which take time and investment. However, not only for competitiveness but for compliance, sustainability will have to be a core part of their brand soon. London Fashion Week plans to implement this same standards for all brands starting 2026. Finally, a better and holistic understanding of sustainability. London Fashion Week and Copenhagen Fashion week are big strong platforms for the industry. By demanding minimum sustainable standards that go beyond materials, these institutions are molding the industry and the customer towards positive outcomes for the planet, the people and businesses. The minimum standards goes around certified materials, material sourcing, sustainable materials, labor practices, and some other features like unsustainable set designs. Again, sustainability as a holistic approach.

Beyond the fun of having a mysterious knight in the red carpet, London Fashion Week is good news this time.

Read you soon, ciao ciao for now.
